Current Prices For Heating Oil
|
The price of oil is high and getting higher. When winter comes many households will find themselves struggling with astronomical heating bills. This is because when the cost of the fuel used to heat your home rises, so does your bill. The good news is that despite the current prices for heating oil, there are various ways you can heat your home without spending a fortune. One strategy is to winterproof your home in order to prevent cold air from entering and warm air from escaping. You'll be surprised at how much more efficient your heating system is after making a few minor adjustments around your home.
First, go through your home and do what many call an energy audit. Look at the areas where cold air could be entering and warm air could be escaping. Around doors, windows and electrical outlets are prime spots. Placing weatherstripping around the cracks can make a big difference. Check under cabinets for holes and cracks. Expansion foam is excellent for underneath cabinets. Not only can it block off the entryway for cold air, it can block off the entryway for household pests such as mice and insects. There are some other areas where you may be losing heat and don't even know it.
If you've got a window unit air conditioner, be sure to cover it over for the winter. There are various ways to do this but perhaps the most simple method is to cut a large trash bag to create a cover and secure it over the air conditioner with strong clear packing tape. You could also remove the unit from the window altogether during the winter season. Bathroom and kitchen fans suck out heat so don't use them unless absolutely necessary. If you have a basement, insulate the floor above it to prevent cold air from traveling from the basement to your living space. Attics should also be adequately insulated. Toss those sheer summer window panels and go for thick, heavy drapes which also help insulate your home against the cold.
In addition to winterizing your home, you may want to consider switching heating systems. The current prices for heating oil show no sign of plummeting, so many consumers are looking for alternatives. Examples include solar heat and wood heat. Solar heat uses the power of the sun and is a favorite method of environmentalists. Wood heat is cheap and has been used since the beginning of time. However if you cannot handle carrying wood or don't have adequate wood storage this method of heat may not work for you.
